Trip to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park

This past weekend I visited Gatlinburg, Tn with 5 other cyclists and road into the Great Smoky Mountains. Overall the trip was a blast and a great location to break in my new bike, which I built in my hotel on the way there. As a group we went on three rides leaving our cabin we rented. While the weather didn't hold up at least the riding was good. Our rides all started with a crazy decent down the mountain with numerous tight switchbacks. It was really a lot of fun, then we would venture into the mountains or the park on the outskirts of town. This area must be extremely beautiful in the fall or summer, I might have to come back again. The strangest sight was the hundreds of people dressed up like Santa. Just so happens it was the weekend of the worlds largest professional Santa gathering, crazy... All rides ended however with "the climb" the only way back to the cabin and it was always the worse. That hill was 3 miles of pain, with gradients nearing nearly 20%. After each ride I was glad we had a hot tube to relax in. I'm not sure my legs would have made it without. Overall I think my spring fitness is coming along nicely. The real test is coming up this weekend at the Fisk Knob TT. Hopefully the weather turns out better then last year.

2010 Off Season Update
So it has been a while since I have last posted, so I figured I was due to post an update. So far the off season is going great. September through December I did strength training after work at the local gym. I focused a lot on core and lower body strength, also worked on some muscle strength imbalances. During this time I was still spinning aerobically just under 5 hours per week though. I think the lifting will help a lot, if anything it gives me some extra padding when I crash.
Since January my focus has been spinning 100%. I can’t stand doing base aerobic spinning in the basement on my trainer though, so I have ventured back out to riding the roads. I have to say the cold really isn’t too bad. Riding in the parks at night is a very peaceful and relaxing experience. With 7 weeks till the pre season starts I am a bit nervous. My workouts have shifted to 2 gut busting interval workouts a week ranging from 70-90 minutes each. Then 3-7 hours of base aerobic riding the rest of the week. Hopefully it all pays off. The only downside right now is I have no team clothing and race bike. Hopefully that gets resolved soon.

My Equipment
Mountain Bike
2010 Giant XTC 29er 2
This bike is a blast to ride. It rides great and is perfect for the obstacles Michigan trails have to offer. The frame is very stiff and climbs great. The new Giant rims allow me to run 25 psi with tubes. If I had any complaints it would be its weight. I am guessing mine weights some where around 29lbs right now. With some upgrades down the road I am sure I could knock it down to 24lbs or so.
It also tends to push a little bit in corners, but that might just be my handling skills. I am still adjusting to the 29er ride, but I am hooked on it. Its a great cross training bike and with some Nokian Gazza Extreme 294 studded tires...should be a blast to ride this winter.
All Purpose and Training Bike
2008 Novara Squadra
Configured with SRAM Rival, Force crank and Fulcrum Racing 1 wheels. Somehow this bike survived the entire 2009 season. For my first season I wanted a cheap disposable bike. In the end I think I would have been much better off buying and bike with an Aluminum frame from a more reputable manufacture. While the carbon frame is semi light, it lacks the stiffness to be a great race bike. However this bike provides a very comfortable ride that is great for 3+ hour training rides.
The Bike Carrier
2005 Mazda 3s
What better bike carrier then a sport compact that can get 30 mpg. So whats the best way to carry expensive race bikes...build a custom bike mount to store the bike safely inside the vehicle. To do this I took out the rear seat and gutted the back interior, then replaced the rear seat with a plywood sheet.
Then I added a fork mount that attaches to the spare tire. Lastly add a little carpet and you have a nice looking bike carrying system.
For 2010 I will have a new race bike. Post to follow when I get it.
